a life with multiple lipomas

Life with multiple lipomas
Hello to all
I have multiple lipomas all my life.  Genetic and heredity  from my Mom  and her mom .  I was the only one out of 4 they were passed down to.  In my twenties I had a full anesthesia procedure in hospital to remove about 40 at once. Mostly all mine are in the trunk region, from below my chest line to my pelvis and around the sides  with a small few in the arms and legs etc. Over the years many grew back.I am in my 50ies now and extremely athletic , in good shape, educated about my diet , perhaps 3 pounds overweight around my waist for enjoying red wine etc . I read all the posts and comments about diet and cures and ask myself, what can stop these??   I see people eating junk food , fats, french fries and processed white flour products , obese and out of shape people and they have smooth skin and no lumps.  It's not diet related in my opinion.
That being said, If one is pre disposed to theses lumps, one might find ways to camouflage them and minimize their growth  but its lots of work , decipline and trial and error. To be able to study the  non surgical cures would take much time and money.
So I have opted to have them surgically remover several times.  About 5 -7 years back I had another 20 or so removed with local anestisia.  This I found painful, the needles and the cutting into non numbed portions of skin. It was like torture and I dread that again.  So im thinking of going once more to get about 40 or so removed in one shot under the knife in a hospital. I am hoping I can get this covered by Ins??
To all the good people who write on this site, I feel for you.  Some are not as bad as my case and many worse off.  But this is a warring and draining situation that warrants the medical establishments attention.  Why would I and others choose to accept all these cuts and scars, cost and distraction from life if it wasn't? Psychologically, these lumps echo of abnormality and disease, tumors and sickness even thought they are harmless.  They wear on our psych and confidence.  I almost say, "Whats the point"? of working out and staying in shape with all these ugly asymmetrical lumps popping out ? It's not just empty vanity but a true psychological hardship in my opinion.Scars on the other hand seem  somewhat attractive, born of participation and experience in life.  There are even tribes and certain cultures that scar themselves as rite of passage.  When my body was lump free and scarred , I didn't mind the scars at all.Lumps just don't feel right !
So hang in there everyone and know you are not alone and not crazy fro hating these.  If anyone has any comments, counterpoints or medical and curative advise, i would be grateful to hear from you
best to all

multiple lipomas

You've pretty much summed up how we all feel. I've gone under the knife many times. I'd like to know how you are coping with insurance and if you have any physical complications. Like you I don't think it has much to do with diet. And like you I work out, but hate the sight of them as they tend to look out of place on muscle (or anywhere for that matter). I'm getting ready to go through the knife thing again, because I don't believe there is any real alternative. What I read sometimes on this site is kind of hard to believe. But I'd like to think a magic bullet is somewhere out there ...

surgery

hi  jfrank/     where do you live??  i am in the nyc area.   i never had complications with the surgery.    insurance did not pay for any of my surgeries when i had them.  i paid cash to the last plastic surgeon and he gave me a break on the cost but that was local injections and lots of pain

im going to try to get an under anestisia surgery to remove about 30 or so  one last time.   if they do a complete job and remove all the mass they wont grow back for years.   some never grew back and some did.  i can only figure that they did not remove all the material of the ones that did.

i am taking diatomaceous earth  everyday and eating well but how can this matter?  look at the burger king and macdonalds crowd with smooth skin.

christ what a headache!

tell me more and keep in touch

diet might matter

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am 31 and I had my first lipoma when I was 16. They were never a problem for me, but from the past 2 yrs, I  see more lipomas growing on the stomach and thighs. It is so embarassing.

My only logical reasoning that diet might matter, - shell fish, for some people its a night mare and for some its a delicious dish, may be our body couldn't digest certain type of foods.( Lactic acid )

I actually thought exercise might help with lipomas a lot, but reading through lot of experiences, it doesnt seem to really help.

PS: I am a newbee, still trying to understand a lot about lipomas and it sucks that there is no cure.

much is unknown

yes  diet might matter.  i really dont know because there are so many variables. again, why would my mom and grandmother have them and not anyone else in the family etc?

most of mine are in the stomach and trunk area. recently, within two months i saw a string of them come in from my belly button up to my upper stomach  5or 6 came in a short span.   i feel if i dont get them out i will be overun with them so it really backs you into a corner.

have you consulted with a doctor to see if your ins will pay? if they produce psyc stress it can hamper your  self image and well being etc.

i already know that they have altered my life.  i work around them in a sense. make subtle decisions not to do this or that etc. not a great feeling and can wear on ya.

ok  take care and we can share anything we learn

surgery

I live in the Atlanta region. I recently consulted my doctor about the number of lipomas in my stomach area. I seem to have gassy cramps (the only way I can describe it), and asked him his opinion. He basically didn't think the deposits were the problem, and it's probably correct. I plan on consulting another sports physician later, as it appears to be a problem when I do certain exercises. Most likely unrelated. But a couple on my arm do give me problems and I'm going to consult a surgeon when I get some time off. Some people believe it is diet related, but I don't think that's the problem. I lived abroad for several years and had a completely different diet, yet they still came. If it were diet related we would have concrete answers - but we don't. I could be wrong. Some people swear by castor oil, but I haven't tried that yet. For those in my stomach region, it would be useless as they have become more like masses than small lumps under the skin. My doctor says not to worry about it, and just leave them alone. Easy for him to say, he doesn't have any. What kind of shots did you have? And did they actually remove the fatty sac? Some say the shots don't last long as the lipomas grow back. Having so many removed at once seems like a lot of stress. Are you up for it?

Lipomas

I got my first lipoma when i was 16 and it went away, then I started getting them back a few years later, I was very active and they stayed small, but when I was about 22 they started to get bigger so I got them removed when I was about 25 I also started to lose my hair at 25, then obout a year later after I had 10 of them removed, more started to grow, but they stayed small, so around 32 they got bigger and multiplied and now I'm 37 and I have around 30 of them and about ten of then are the size of a golf ball,I have them all over my body, and I was going to remove the bigger ones, but I got scare when the Dr. changed my appointment several times, so I said maybe is not meant tobe.

Now I feel that I got more as I got older and less active and my diet is poor.   I'm 5.07 wt 180 and when I was 25 I was 160.

I believe Lipomas are generic, but we can reduce them with proper nutrition and exercise

Hello

I am worried that the lumps on my body is more then lipoma tumors. My dr diagnosed them by feeling of my skin... I have had a CT scan done of my abdomen area and an ultra sound on top of numerous xrays. Usually they only bother me every so often when i throw my back out from bending down too fast or something like that. But recently I can feel it pushing on my ribs, and it feels as though it is wrapping around my hips and putting pressure on them.  I am getting to where I can't even sleep good or be intimate with my husband because I feel like something around my lipomas is being "squished". Now it is a constant pain around both sides of my ribs...

hi

I am new to all of this too, I don't know where to begin or what to look for or if I was even diagnosed correctly... If this is lipoma tumors that I have then I am similar to you. I noticed my first lump when I was about 15 or so, and never really had a problem out of it other then my back getting "tired"  after standing kind of bent over like while i was doing dishes... Until i reached about 28 then i threw my back out for the first time and noticed after my spasams went away that there was some kind of growth running up both my sides. Now since I found them its like i can feel the lumps every where...  in my hips, under and on top of my ribs, through my back and up my sides... So I just feel kind of lost and trying to find some answers just as you are...

Greetings all. I am a 25 year

Greetings all. I am a 25 year old male with approximately 30 lipomas. I notice my first when I was around 8 or 9 years old. It wasn't untill I was in my late teens when I first gained a lot of weight in a short period of time and then lost it just as quickly that I really started to notice multiple lipomas. Currently about 7 of my lipomas are of considerable size (3.5-5 inches in diameter). After many years of psycological distress I am having them all removed "under the knife" and am happy to have it done. Hopefully they will not grown back. I can not wait to move on from this as it has greatly affected my self confidence and body image. My surgery is next Friday. Good luck to everyone out there who has lipomas.
